The Founder Resilience Report
Fuelling founder resilience
A playbook for surviving and thriving in entrepreneurship
92%
of founders identify resilience as the #1 trait required for entrepreneurship
Introducing the Founder Resilience Research
Ask any founder and they’ll say that the path of entrepreneurship can be tough at times. Deeply rewarding and empowering, but tough. The uncertainty, the need for constant adaptation, and the emotional connection make for an exhilarating ride but a cognitively and emotionally challenging one, distinguishing it from other types of leadership. These unique challenges explain why 92% of founders identified resilience as the #1 trait required in our founder research five years ago
Yet little is known about founder resilience and more importantly, how to build it. Our mission with this research was to start to plug that gap and dive into how and why this life of founderhood is different, and learn how we can fuel it effectively.

About the
research
With extensive support from partners across the startup and scaleup ecosystem, nearly 400 entrepreneurs shared their experiences in this research, making it the largest study on founder resilience yet. By examining leadership factors, health, psychological state and founder resilience, it provides a snapshot of founder health and provides evidence-based, actionable insights for surviving and thriving as a founder – both for entrepreneurs themselves and for those enabling them in the startup and investment ecosystem.
The research incorporates the Brief Resilience Scale (BRS) – a validated tool for assessing an individual’s ability to recover and bounce back from challenging situations – which enables a comparison of founders demonstrating high resilience with those demonstrating low resilience so that we can better understand the driving factors underlying highly resilient founderhood.
