Because someone needs to say it out loud: YOU are the reason the whole startup ecosystem exists. You’re creating jobs, driving innovation and putting your mark on the world. It takes the bold and the brave to do it. And that deserves to be fuelled.
This is not said enough. In fact, as founders we don’t even celebrate or acknowledge the milestones ourselves, let alone pause to recognize what it actually takes to be a founder. So we’re taking a moment to do it for you.
You make progress happen. You’re the ones turning ideas into companies, problems into solutions, uncertainty into opportunity. And all too often, that gets lost. Lost in the ARR targets, the runway calculations, the team wrangling, the pitch deck iterations. The human behind it – the asset driving everything – gets forgotten.
So this one is unapologetically for you. For founders everywhere.
Why this matters
Having spent thousands of hours in our FounderCircle groups with tech founders over the last 6 years, there’s one thing that never ceases to amaze me – the sheer drive to make a difference, to act, and to have an impact – despite the endless set-backs.
And that comes through in the research data too: 92% of founders are deeply passionate about what they’re doing. And despite everything – the uncertainty, the weight of responsibility, the always-on culture – 89% are glad to be an entrepreneur, and wouldn’t choose any other job!
When we dig into why we do this, the answers are clear: impact, making a difference, solving hard problems, freedom, autonomy, the mission. Founders don’t wallow in the woes. It’s about driving for change.
But here’s the reality of what that drive costs: Half of us feel stressed and worried for half of an average week. 76% feel lonely (50% more than CEOs generally), 69% have a fear of failure and 57% feel guilty when we take any kind of break in the day. Even though we know what happens when we run on empty – slower decisions, shorter fuses, less clarity – most of us keep running anyway.
At its core, Foundology was created to fuel the founders who keep running, who keep driving, and keep making things happen. Having spent thousands of hours with founders (as well as being founders ourselves), we believe that the ecosystem’s obsession with ARR and exits has missed something fundamental: you can’t build a high-performing company without being a high-performing founder.
And the research backs it up. The founders who are thriving aren’t just grinding harder. They’re fueling themselves differently.
What the research reveals
The Founder Resilience Research analysed nearly 400 entrepreneurs across every startup stage, becoming the largest study on founderhood conducted to date. And what it revealed told us what we all needed to hear about founder performance.
The high-performers, the ones with high resilience scores, aren’t just lucky. They’re optimizing themselves – proactively. They’ve developed ways of thinking that bolster their performance. They tune into their early signals of stress and intervene before their leadership is depleted. They commit to habits that protect their ongoing performance, and also make time for peer support and coaching, even when it feels like they don’t have time, because they’ve learned that isolation kills performance.
The data is unambiguous: founders with low resilience scores had 65% more symptoms of stress and strain. They were four times more overwhelmed and more anxious, which blocks their performance and confidence in everyday decisions and actions. Put it all together and they’re also twice as likely to have considered quitting their startup entirely.
The good news is that those founders with high-resilience scores, also show us the way to fuel ourselves as founders – like any other critical asset in the business.
The four types of founder fuel
Through the research, we identified the distinct habits and actions that resilient, thriving founders do differently versus those at risk of burning out. We have mapped these to four different founder fuel “tanks”:
Mental fuel: This tank fuels your ability to think clearly under pressure, stay confident, and reframe your mindset constructively when challenges hit. High-resilience founders proactively develop resilient thinking patterns – which drives better decision-making and improved pace.
Emotional fuel: This tank fuels your ability to recognize stress signals early, relate to your emotions, and manage them productively. The research showed high-resilience founders actively monitor their emotional state and intervene when they see early signs – helping them avoid reactive behavior, procrastination, and decision-paralysis.
Physical fuel: This tank is filled by the day-to-day performance habits that keep your physical body working well, such as exercise, downtime, and sleep. Most of us feel guilty taking time for these things, but the high-performers protect time for it anyway – because it unlocks mental clarity and emotional equanimity.
Social fuel: This tank is filled with meaningful support, particularly from other founders, who offer shared experiences and privileged knowledge. The high-resilience founders make time for this, despite the time-pressures, because they know isolation and loneliness blocks decision making and action.
The problem: you can’t fuel what you don’t measure
As founders we track everything: Runway. Churn. Customer acquisition costs. We obsess over the KPIs that matter.
But when was the last time you tracked you?
A fitness tracker maybe, but that’s tough to tie to the demands of our day-to-day. So we just keep running until something breaks – a decision that takes too long, a reaction we regret, a week where nothing feels clear.
When we think of ourselves as a critical business asset, it makes sense to consider our founder KPIs. Not as a reportable diagnostic, but as an ever-changing entity that can be optimised with micro-adjustments.
But you can’t optimize what you can’t see.
So we built something
The FounderFuel Pulse is a free, 3-minute check-in that shows you exactly where your founder KPIs are across all four fuel types – Mental, Emotional, Physical, and Social. Backed by the research it helps you understand and strengthen the resources that underpin your decision-making clarity, leadership capabilities and sustained performance under pressure.
In your Pulse report, you’ll get a read on your Bounceback Ability – which indexes your resilience levels right now, as well as scores for each of the four Founder Fuel tanks. You also get practical, founder-tested strategies to top-up any tanks that are running low – based on what high-resilience founders actually do differently.
This isn’t therapy. This isn’t wellness fluff. This is asset management for the most important asset in your startup: you.
